Last day to Shop the Battlefords

Dec 19, 2016 | 1:00 PM

The Shop the Battlefords app is closing out its first campaign today, and the Chamber of Commerce is encouraging everyone to get out and do their holiday shopping locally.

Chamber executive director Linda Machniak said from what chamber members are hearing she thinks they’ll be pleased with the success of the app.

“We have a significant number of users, we have had several businesses really take the program under their wing and promote it and have really seen success in purchases and shopping that’s done locally,” she said.

Shop the Battlefords, which was launched in October, encourages shopping locally by offering promotions at the participating businesses, and rewarding points when shoppers visit or spend money at a participating business or donate to a participating charity. Points for visiting, sharing on social media, donating and shopping go toward various prizes.

Shoppers can still earn points in the app for the rest of the day, Dec. 19, and prizes for the different categories will be announced Thursday.

With only a few days left before the holidays, Machniak stressed the importance of shopping locally.

“There are so many key parts to the benefits of shopping locally, or shopping in the Battlefords for those who live here — the businesses that contribute to our non-profit and community groups. The businesses that provide jobs for our young people as they are coming up through school and working. The more that we can promote and develop the businesses here, the more those opportunities and donations exist for the entire community,” she said. “The whole community benefits when the business community prospers and is strong.”

Machniak said there haven’t been any formal discussions yet about the future of the app. She said after the campaign closes today they’ll start gathering information from not only the app itself, but from chamber members, participating businesses and consumers. From there, there will be discussions in 2017 about whether to move forward with the app and how.
