Penalties and speed too much for AAA Sharks

Dec 5, 2016 | 4:00 PM

The AAA Sharks were on the wrong end of two lopsided scores over the weekend, falling 6-1 and 7-2 to the Prince Albert Northern Bears in back-to-back home games.

The Northern Bears had won 10 of 12 games coming into the weekend — and they showed why — firing 101 pucks on goal in the two games, while allowing just 55 shots against.

Sharks head coach Gary Berggren said the most difficult thing was dealing with the Bears’ speed.

“They really came at us with speed and we had trouble — our defence were struggling a little bit with the speed of their forwards,” Berggren said on Monday. “They’re a fast team. They move the puck well and we needed to be physical to play against them. It’s kind of a catch-22 sometimes — you’re trying to be physical and you end up with a ref that likes to call a little bit more than you thought they would and then you end up in the box. But that’s kind of the style we needed to play to stop their speed and in the end it kind of backfired on us.”

With the Sharks in the box because of their aggressive style, P.A. took advantage.

On Saturday, the visitor’s power play was lethal, scoring four times on seven tries.

After allowing that many power play goals, the Sharks changed their penalty kill for Sunday’s game, deciding to be a little bit less aggressive and instead keep a tight box.

But the results were fairly similar, as the Bears again scored four times with the man advantage.

“We usually are aggressive and force a lot and they were moving the puck faster than we could rotate,” Berggren said. “So in the second game we tried to just box it up and tried to just block shots and keep them to the outside and for the most part it was better… it’s just in that second game we took 16 penalties.

“When you take 16 penalties, you’re not going to win too many games.”

Because of all the penalties on Saturday, Berggren will be reminding the team about the need to stay disciplined moving forward, especially considering their next two games are against the league-leading Saskatoon Stars.

They will also be working on their own power play this upcoming week, which didn’t generate enough opportunities against P.A.

“There were quite a few retaliatory penalties that we took and we need to be more disciplined if we are going to stay in the game with some of these top teams,” Berggren said. “On our power play we didn’t create anything either. We had our chances but we obviously didn’t score so we didn’t create enough.

“Hopefully in two weekends when we play Saskatoon, hopefully it will be [better].”

The games against Saskatoon are both on the road, first on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 7:45 p.m. and then on Dec. 18 at 2:15 p.m. The two contests are the final games before the winter break.

On the season, the Sharks are now 3-9-0-1.
