Local group donates 100 blankets to children in need

Knitting 100 blankets might seem like a big goal, but the Knit ‘N Natters group did it with ease.

The long standing, but recently named knitting group began their work a few months ago with the goal make 100 cuddle blankets ready by Christmas to donate to the Battlefords Early Childhood Intervention Program (BECIP). On Nov. 29, the knitters presented their batch to BECIP handing over a total of 112 blankets.

Along with their blankets, at risk children will receive a gift from BECIP, according to one Knit ‘N Natters member, Vistara Sidebottom.

“They’re families in risk, so it’s either health risks or financial risks, things like that. Maybe there are literacy problems, that sort of thing. So what they’re doing this year is giving a blanket and a book and hoping that will encourage cuddling with the book and reading together and addressing a couple issues at once,” Sidebottom said.

She pointed to the groups that made their blanket project possible including Big Brother Big Sisters, Mennonite Community Closet, and Crandleberry’s Cafe, the home of their weekly meet ups.

The knitting group started-up from a yarn bombing project during Culture Days years ago, and the group has been getting together ever since.

“The group serves so many different purposes. It brings groups of people together, it brings knitting out into the public, and it gives women an opportunity, because it’s always been women.” she said.

While they may not get into another community project right away, the Knit ‘N Natters will continue to meet up every week at Crandleberry’s.

“There will be other projects. And even if we’re not doing projects for community groups, all of us knit for our own families and our own pleasures,” she said.
