Battlefords Immigration promotes cultural Christmas at the museum
The North Battleford museum plans on using the holiday season to invite local immigrants to show the community the traditional ways they celebrate the holiday back home.
The Western Development Museum (WDM) will hold its seventh annual Prairie Christmas celebration this Saturday, Dec. 3. Program coordinator Cheryl Stewart-Rahm said she encourages families to come and enjoy all the activities planned along with the usual exhibits. There is one event in particular they started last year which they are bringing back.
“We have some of our new Canadians come out and they share some of their Christmas traditions with the general public,” Stewart- Rahm said. “They might do a cross from where they are from. For example last year a family from the Philippines showed us some Christmas stars which is a traditional craft from their country.”
Stewart-Rahm said Battlefords Immigration hasn’t told her what the families have planned for this year. She added there will be a lot of other events including shopping in Santa’s workshop for the kids where all gifts are $5. Crafts, face painting and of course meeting Santa Claus himself will happen throughout the day. Due to the lack of snow, Stewart-Rahm said there will be wagon rides instead of sleigh rides.
