Provincial task force to address crime

Nov 30, 2016 | 6:19 AM

A provincial committee will look at causes of and solutions to crime in Saskatchewan.

“It’s something we’ve heard, and certainly the premier has in his travels across the province heard people’s concerns about crime,” Battlefords MLA Herb Cox said. “Whether it’s rural crime or whether it’s crime in the cities, in the communities, wherever it may be, he’s asked us to put together a committee and we’re going to explore, hopefully, some solutions to curbing some of the crime.”

Cox, who is chair of the committee, said it’s still in the early stages, but he’s hoping there will be a finished report in February.

He said the committee isn’t focused yet on any certain areas or demographics, but some concerns are property crimes in rural areas, police presence in rural areas and drug abuse –

especially of fentanyl – in urban areas.

“Hopefully from the report will come some solutions that are going to solve some of this crime,” he said. “I think we really need to look at the causes of the crime, not just the crime itself – is it a lack of education, is it property, is it homelessness, is it health-related, is it drug-related – what is it? Those are the things we’re going to examine.”

North Battleford has received several years of high crime severity index (CSI) ratings from Statistics Canada. The CSI increased from 2014 to 2015 in urban North Battleford which saw a 16 per cent increase.
