Downtown N.B. bringing holiday cheer

Nov 21, 2016 | 1:00 PM

Downtown North Battleford hopes to bring some holiday cheer to the city’s streets with the seventh annual winter parade and festival this weekend.

“It’s just an exciting kick-off to the Christmas season downtown,” Lisa Kissick, executive director of Downtown North Battleford, said. “We have a great group of people to work with to bring some Christmas spirit to the Battlefords.”

The organization partners with the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club, Innovation Credit Union and Loraas Environmental to bring the festival to North Battleford on Saturday, Nov. 26.

There will be fire pits to roast marshmallows and hot dogs, hot chocolate, and sleigh rides outside, while kids can warm up in the Credit Union building getting pictures with Santa Claus.

The Battlefords Beaver Blues hockey team will also be on hand to play street hockey with kids.

The festival runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the Innovation Credit Union on 102nd St. and the parade starts at 4 p.m. Kissick said there is still time to register a float in the parade.

Another holiday event coming up for Downtown North Battleford is Unsilent Night on Dec. 1.

Unsilent Night is a composition by Phil Kline, in which the audience creates the music. Events take place throughout the month of December around the world. Kissick said it’s a great spirit-building event for the holiday season.

“We basically just do a walking tour, listen to music, check out Christmas decorations, enjoy each other’s company and create this kind of moving symphony of sound,” Kissick said. “It’s really quite magical.”

In North Battleford, participants download the Unsilent Night app and bring their devices to Central Park on Dec. 1. The app assigns each person one track out of four to play and everyone starts their track at the same time, creating a piece of music that’s different from each participant’s perspective.

Kissick said even if someone doesn’t have or can’t bring a device to play the music, she still encourages them to come out to enjoy the event. She said the walk will take roughly 45 minutes and participants are welcome to bring strollers and wagons for kids.
