City Council spreads out committee obligations

Nov 16, 2016 | 6:38 AM

North Battleford’s newly appointed mayor and council have an opportunity to leave a lasting mark after recently assigned local committees.

“I think it’s important as a member of this council that all of council is kept addressed on what’s going on in these organizations,” Mayor Ryan Bater said.

Some of the organizations are city funded, while others have asked for city representation. Sitting on these committees allow council members to understand each organization’s decision making process.

Mayor Bater was appointed to just one board, the BATC Community Development Corporation. The BATC CDC works with the First Nation communities in the Battlefords area to aid in a variety of social, economic and educational community developments, along with justice and health initiatives.

Incumbent councillor Greg Lightfoot was appointed to the Battlefords Handi-bus, North Battleford Public Transit, and Downtown Business Improvement District. During recent years, the development of the downtown and the business district has been a key focus of city council.

New comer, Councillor Kevin Steinborn was appointed to Concern for Youth and SAGE. SAGE, standing for Safety, Acceptance, Guidance and Empowerment, is a pilot program from the federal government to aid in the reduction of crime through community involvement. Concern for Youth’s mission is to use proactive approaches to help young people make responsible decisions.

Councillor Len Taylor was appointed to the most boards with four. He was appointed to the Jackfish Lake Watershed Association, the Lakeland Library Region, the North Battleford Library and the North Battleford Golf and Country Club.

In his first term on council, Kent Lindgren was appointed to the Table Mountain Regional Park and co-appointed to the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts.

With North Battleford hosting the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games, Don Buglas was appointed to the event’s board. He will share the Dekker Centre appointment with Lindgren, while also earning the Leisure Services Advisory Committee.

Lastly, Councillor Kelli Hawtin was also co-appointed to the Leisure Services Advisory Committee with Buglas, which consists of the two council members, a handful of community members, and a youth representative from each of the high schools. The committee works to engage the community and youth through services provided by the city.

Mayor and council will be appointed to these boards and committees for a two year term, ending in December of 2018.
