Students in N.B. learn about the election process

They may not be eligible to vote yet but thanks to an election program, when the time comes these students will be ready.

Students from John Paul ll Collegiate in North Battleford took part in a mock election this week. They researched candidates running for city council and set up voting booths. Replicas of the ballot used in the municipal election were provided and students were asked to cast their vote the same way a registered voter would at an official poll.

Teacher Laura Wells said it is an amazing program and plans to use it again.

“The whole idea of voting can be intimidating and they don’t know what to expect,” Wells said. “Sometimes they don’t understand just how important voting is. For years people had to fight to be able to vote and now for people to be nonchalant about voting is really sad.”

Wells admitted it can be tough getting high school students interested in the process.

“The reception has been a mixed bag,” Well said. “Some think it is cool and others don’t care. Anything to do with politics isn’t generally at the top of their priority list at this age.”

Wells was right about the latter, especially when it came to one student. Justin Starr who recently turned 18 and is now eligible to vote wasn’t keen on the subject before the program.

“It wasn’t exactly what I expected but then again I didn’t know what to expect,” Starr said. “I always thought I would be a person who wouldn’t vote, but now I’ll always vote. You have to make your opinion heard. I didn’t think I was but I will be voting today.”

Kendra Deline also took part in the program. She isn’t old enough to vote, knows what to do when the time comes.

“I knew a bit [about voting] but I didn’t know about the process itself,” Deline said. “I didn’t know how particular it was and how ballots had to be crossed and folded a certain way. I didn’t think voting was that big of a deal before but now I feel more involved.”

All the students’ votes will be tallied and released on the Student Vote website after the polls close today.
