Candidate hopes for continuity with Battleford’s council

Running for re-election, a candidate for Battleford’s council is hoping he can keep the ball rolling on some currently underway projects.

Doug Laing, business development manager at Anderson Pump House, said he’s enjoyed working with the staff and the town while on council and hoped to build on already established relationships if elected.

“It’s been a bit of a learning curve with council so I want to go back and be able to offer some continuity and bring my first term experience back for the second time around,” he said.

He’s running on a platform of extended infrastructure progression, such as paved roads and sidewalks.

“[I’d like to] make sure that the infrastructure of the town is always on our minds and in our budgets and we’re continuing going forward in that direction,” he said.

He’s also against amalgamation with the City of North Battleford, which he said represents the common mood among councillors.

“There are some things that we share and some projects that overlap, but at this time…I would say [I am] definitely not in favor of amalgamating the town with the city at this time,” he said.

For Laing, who has lived in Battleford for almost all of his life and raised his family here, being part of council has been something he’s been interested in for a long time.

He said he hopes there is a large turnout to vote on election day, Oct. 26, especially given the low attendance at previous elections.
