Orange Shirt Day for residential school children marked in northern Saskatchewan

Sep 27, 2016 | 11:15 AM

ILE-A-LA-CROSSE, Sask. — A school in northern Saskatchewan is showing support for children who attended residential schools.

Lt.-Gov. Vaughn Solomon Schofield joined staff and students at the Rossignol school in Ile-a-la-Crosse today to mark Orange Shirt Day.

The day was inspired by a B.C. woman who dressed up in a new orange shirt on her first day of residential school, but was quickly made to wear the institutional uniform.

Phyllis Webstad of Williams Lake said the experience made her feel worthless and insignificant.
