Minimum Wage and Minimum Call Out Pay

Minimum Wage

The current minimum wage in Saskatchewan is $10.50 per hour.  Effective October 1, 2016, minimum wage will be increasing to $10.72 per hour.  

Most employees must be paid at least minimum wage for each hour worked or spent at the disposal of their employer.

The minimum wage in Saskatchewan will be indexed. This means the minimum wage rate will be calculated using changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a collection of goods and services typically purchased by households, and the Average Hourly Wage in Saskatchewan for the previous year. This new approach will help to provide security for minimum wage earners and ensure predictability for business owners in the province.

Changes to the minimum wage must be announced on or before June 30th of each year and will take effect October 1st of the same year to give business owners the ability to plan for the change.

Minimum Call-out Pay

Most employees get a minimum payment (“minimum call-out” pay) every time their employer requires them to report for work (other than for overtime), even if there is no work for them. Employees are to be paid a minimum of three hours at their hourly wage.  If an employee does work, but less than three hours, the employer is still required to pay the employee for a minimum of three hours of work at the employee’s hourly wage.

For example, if an employee, who is paid $15/hour, is called in to work and is sent home as there is no work for them to do, the employer is required to pay the employee $45 (minimum three hours of work at the employee’s hourly wage). If the same employee was called into work, and only worked 2 hours, the employer would still be required to pay the minimum call-out pay to the employee of $45.

Currently, minimum call-out pay rules do not apply to: 

Students in Grade 12 or lower during school term
School bus drivers
Noon hour supervisors employed by a school board

If these employees work, they are only paid for the time worked with a minimum of one hour.

The Minimum Wage Regulations were amended to establish age 16 as the general minimum age of employment in Saskatchewan. An ‘absolute’ minimum age of 14 has also been established provided those 14 and 15 year old workers fulfil certain requirements.
