UPDATE: SUV hits parked biker on Highway 16

Aug 29, 2016 | 3:26 PM

Police are investigating after a biker parked on the shoulder of the highway was struck by a speeding SUV earlier this afternoon.

The collision happened just outside of Delmas on Highway 16. According to Mark Lauzon, an eye witness, the white Chevy Trailblazer was speeding.

“The white car passed me going at least 140 (km per hour),” Lauzon said. “After it passed me it moved over to the right lane, then into the right shoulder and hit the guy who I believe was stopped and having a cigarette. They both passed me and when I saw the car go onto the shoulder, I thought maybe they knew the biker but she didn’t stop. She hit him.”

According to Lauzon, the SUV continued to drive into the ditch and jumped the side road, eventually stopping in a field.

“It was an older lady and I don’t think she knew where she was. It didn’t look like she hit the brakes. She just kept going,” Lauzon said.

Both the male biker and the female driver were conscious when they were loaded into the attending ambulances.

The biker, 53, sustained injuries to his legs and torso. He was first transferred to Battlefords Union Hospital but his injuries were more serious than initially thought and he was then transferred to the Royal Univiersity hospital in Saskatoon. The female driver of the SUV was transported to Battlefords Union Hospital with an injured arm. RCMP said in a media release alcohol was not a factor in the collision. The collision remains under investigation.
