Annual festival coming to the streets of Cochin

Aug 11, 2016 | 6:00 AM

One village is winding up for its annual festival which started more than 30 years ago.

Cochin Days begins Friday and runs until Sunday throughout the Village of Cochin. Organizer Kathy Young said people will be travelling to the village just for the festival, whether they have other homes in the area or are just coming to visit.

“People plan their holidays to come here,” she said. For “some people, this is the only weekend they come because it’s such a fun event.”

The festival features a wide array of events, which Young said cater to children and adults. Some events include a slo-pitch tournament, spaghetti eating contest, trade show and art show, a boat parade, a children’s carnival, a beer garden and live music.

The money raised at the festival, which first started in 1980, goes back to the Village of Cochin for upgrades. Young said it’s the only fundraiser for the village, so whatever is needed comes from Cochin Days.

She said the community loves the event so much it’s easy to find support from sponsors, volunteers and participants.

When “it started out it was very small and it has grown a lot and it’s all through community support and sponsors from around the area that help us,” she said.

Cochin Days starts Friday evening, Aug. 12, with the beginning of the slo-pitch tournament and a movie in the park, and ends Sunday, Aug. 14.
