Change Starts Here

Apr 12, 2016 | 10:38 AM

As with any change, great or small, nothing can be accomplished without taking the first step.

Battlefords United Way is asking you, (yes, YOU)to join us in our mission to improve lives, build community and initiate collective action through engagement and education of individuals as well as businesses.

Battlefords United Way was established in 1969 and despite the struggles, it is as relevant if not more so today, than it was then.

We are a national organization, aligned with United Way Canada in best practices regarding reporting, accountability and transparency.  We are a registered charity providing desperately required funding to non-profits within the Battlefords. That funding comes from your donations and those donations become large investments in terms of social impact within our community. Every dollar donated to Battlefords United Way remains invested within our community and every dollar has the potential to positively impact hundreds of lives within our community:  children, a neighbor, a senior, those suffering from mental illness or disability, a victim of sexual assault, all benefiting from the United Way.

With our major focus areas being; From Poverty to Possibility, Strong Communities/Healthy People, and All that Kids Can Be, we believe that individually and collectively we can make a difference.

What unites us is far more powerful than anything that attempts to divide us. Every one of us wants a safe, nurturing environment for our children, support for our seniors and a hand up for those less fortunate or in need.

Battlefords United Way recognizes that each of us is important and that we can all make a positive contribution to enhance the lives of those around us ultimately impacting our entire community.

Extending ourselves through philanthropy or volunteerism is assuring that positive change is made.

We are currently seeking active and interested board members to represent the Battlefords United Way and we are also in need of volunteers of all ages to assist with events and fund-raising campaigns.

The organization has struggled in recent years due to a decline in donations, the inability to retain qualified personnel year over year and a shrinking board contingent.

Although we know and acknowledge that there are many good causes and only so much time in everyone’s day, we appeal to the Battlefords to endorse the relevance and importance of the United Way by being part of the change we are striving to make. Every gesture, every dollar, every moment spent assisting, makes a difference.

Currently, Rose Silzer-Quinn is the sole employee working part-time out of the United Way office at the Don Ross Centre as Events/Campaign Coordinator. Rose came to the BUW after her retirement from a 33 year career in finance and leadership with a keen desire to serve her community.

Along with current board members: Brendon Boothman, Monte Migneault, Kristeen Thiessen, Ruebecca Fiddler, Duane Lafreniere, Lisa Kissick, Rebecca Lundrigan, Jessica Woytowich and Jenna Russell , Rose is eager to be a driver of change for positive social impact within the Battlefords.
