Layne Young, Coach Hasselberg win SJHL awards

The Saskatchewn Junior Hockey League announced their annual award winners on Monday, March 7, and to no surprise, it featured some Battlefords North Stars.

In his first year in the SJHL, Layne Young was near the top of the leaderboard in scoring all season long, finishing the 2015/2016 campaign with 24 goals and 51 assists in 57 games.

After a strong season in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA league with the Battlefords Stars, when Young finished sixth in league scoring with 64 points, the adjustment to playing against older players couldn’t have gone smoother for Young. Before the season, he listed his goal to score 20 points on the year, a feat he accomplished in his 14th game of the season.

After a slow December when he scored just one goal and three assists in seven games, Young exploded in the 2016 calendar year. He recorded a point in 18 of 20 games in 2016, tallying 11 goals and 23 assists over that span.

A 1997-born player, Young was the only 18-year-old in the top 20 in league scoring, finishing sixth, tied with Austin Calladine of the Kindersley Klippers.

The other award was handed out to the architect behind the North Stars historic season, head coach and general manager Kevin Hasselberg.

In his fifth season with the North Stars, Hasselberg was named the SJHL’s coach of the year as his team finished in first place with a record of 43-11-2-2. The win total was one shy of tying the franchise record, while the 90 points was also one shy of the North Stars team record, both set in the 1995-96 season. Though that year, the North Star played 64 games compared to the 58 they played this season.

The North Stars did set two new franchise record this year, for fewest regulation losses in a season, beating the old record of 12 set in the 2005/2006 season and highest winning percentage at .776.

Since Hasselberg joined the North Stars for the 2011/2012 season the team has a combined record of 174-84-10-14.

The only thing left for the North Stars to accomplish is to win a championship, as they search for their first league title since the 1999/2000 season.
