VIDEO BELOW

During Awareness Month, we are encouraging people to learn the ABC’s of Dementia by visiting ABCDementia.ca and become familiar with the warning signs of dementia. By learning the ABC’s of Dementia people can help empower themselves with an early diagnosis and improve their ability to live well with dementia.

Every 24 hours 10 more people in Saskatchewan will develop Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. Dementia is the most compelling health risk facing Saskatchewan’s aging population. Yet most people can not identify the warning signs of dementia beyond loss of memory.  The warning signs of dementia include changes in abilities, behaviour or communication.

There are 10 evidence-based warning signs.

Dementia doesn’t discriminate and can affect anyone. It’s one of the fastest-growing diseases of our time. By learning the warning signs and seeking an early diagnosis people can empower themselves to live well with dementia.  Being informed and proactive is critical.

That’s why, as part of our campaign, the Alzheimer Society will be featuring a video by Darren Dreger, a Hockey Insider at TSN to help encourage people to become better informed about dementia. His 76-year-old step father, Ervin, who lives in Saskatchewan, was recently diagnosed with dementia. “This is a cause that’s close to my heart and I’m proud to lend my support to the campaign. We need to get over our uneasiness about dementia and start to recognize and talk about it more openly,” says Dreger, who makes his home in Toronto.  The video may be viewed on youtube BELOW.

ABCDementia.ca is an initiative of the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada to inform and empower individuals and families about Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias and to reduce the social isolation of those affected by it.
