NBGCC set to host major junior event

North Battleford Golf and Country Club is getting ready for a major junior golf event.

The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Golf Saskatchewan Order of Merit Series is coming to the club as their first stop on the tour this year on June 16 and 18. The tour runs throughout the summer, with golfers aged 11 to 23 competing under seven different age divisions.

Dana Johnson, Director of Golf at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club said the group is excited to host, but the program is still building toward getting junior players into competitive tournaments.

“It’s great and one of the things we’ve taken great pride in is our junior golf program, for many years,” Johnson said. “We don’t have a lot of competitive kids playing at a lot of these tournament events throughout the province. We have a lot of young kids that aren’t quite ready. Yesterday we had 68 kids come out and play on a Thursday night which is awesome for junior golf. We’re looking forward to hosting the MJT Tour.”

Growing the game from the ground up is important for the golf club, and moving forward Johnson hopes to get these young athletes into tours such as the MJT.

“We have a lot of young kids, a lot under the age of 10 that are just taking up the game,” Johnson said. “They’re just getting interested in the game, and to play a competitive round or a competitive tournament yet may be too much for them because of their age. As they get older maybe to that 12 or 13 years old, maybe they’ll be more comfortable in playing a tournament on this MJT Tour.”

Players competing for titles in the seven divisions will also have the chance to qualify for MJT Team Canada squads that will be going to the JNJG International Junior Classic in Australia this October, along with the Nordic Junior Team Matches in September in Estonia.
