For many, when starting a new sport, competing at a national level may seem like a long shot.

But that isn’t the case for Angela Aucoin.

Aucoin is one of four North Battleford Dart Club members that punched their ticket into competing at the national level from June 12-15 in Drummondville, Quebec. Although Aucoin only started playing Darts in January, she is ready to showcase her skills in Quebec.

“I’m from Ottawa. It’s really going home for me,” Aucoin said. “I’m excited, it’s an experience for sure for someone who’s brand new to darts, let alone going to provincials and nationals, it’s overwhelming for sure.”

Aucoin placed third in the provincial draw on the female side, and along with Melanie Thomas, Jason Skinner and Sharon Acker from the Dart Club will be competing at the National level after their strong showings in Saskatoon at Provincials. Aucoin said she is excited for the opportunity, especially considering how new she is to the sport.

“It’s all new, the sport is new, the experience is new, it’s a really really good community to be going with,” Aucion said. “I’ve made a lot of new friends in the last couple months. It’s going and having this experience with a group of very fun and supportive people.”

Aucoin didn’t lose a single match on day one of competition, defeating eventual tournament winner Georgina Ratt in the final. As the tournament continued, Aucoin fell to the third spot, just below North Battleford teammate and fellow rookie Thomas, out of Spiritwood.

The top eight competitors in both the men’s and women’s competitions moved on to compete in Nationals, while the competitors at the ninth seed in both divisions are chosen as alternates.
