A Taste of Culture celebrates diversity this weekend at WDM

May 31, 2018 | 5:00 PM

For the past 11 years, the Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre has brought people from different backgrounds together with its Taste of Culture celebration.

Each year, the resource centre provides assistance to newcomers integrating into Canada and, in hosting A Taste of Culture, brings a variety of people together regardless of their backgrounds. This year’s event takes place this weekend at the Western Development Museum.

“It’s an amazing event that has been well received over the years,” Centre Executive Director Annette McGovern said. “We have had well over 5,000 attendees in past years, and this year we are expecting big numbers once again.”

Highlights of the weekend will include a citizenship ceremony Friday morning at 10 a.m. when 60 people will be sworn in as Canadian citizens.

“This is such a special ceremony for the people involved,” McGovern said. “The look on the faces of the people who become Canadian citizens is priceless.”

Following the ceremony, A Taste of Culture officially begins at 11 a.m. with something for everyone, according to McGovern.

“We have 16 different cultures being represented this year including two new cultures from Panama and Japan,” she said. “The great thing about it is that each one brings their own traditions.”

Admission is free and visitors can take part in a silent auction, purchase market items, or just enjoy the entertainment that runs all day long including traditional dances and singing.

A Taste of Culture runs both Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
