Novelist to host book launch at North Battleford Library

May 28, 2018 | 2:00 PM

A B.C. novelist with ties to the Battlefords area will launch her new title at the North Battleford Library.

Elinor Florence will be meeting with readers and chatting about her latest novel Wildwood and her first novel Bird’s Eye View on Saturday, June 9.  Florence said any time she can get back to the Battlefords area is a blessing for her.

“I like to come home as frequently as I can,” she said. “My brother and his wife still run the family farm where I grew up, so it’s always nice to get home.”

Florence grew up on a farm near Brada, and began her working career at the Advertiser-Post in North Battleford before moving on to work in all four western provinces as a newspaper writer and editor for over 30 years.

Elinor’s first novel, Bird’s Eye View, was released in 2014 and became a Toronto Star bestseller. The story features a Saskatchewan farm girl who joins the air force during the Second World War and becomes an interpreter of aerial photographs. The novel is set in a fictional town called Touchwood, which is loosely based on the Battlefords.

“I draw my inspiration for my novels from my own experiences, and of course my family background,” Florence said. “My books are also very heavily researched so that readers can enjoy history, but not in a dry and boring way.”

Elinor’s latest novel Wildwood tells the story of a single mother from the city who must spend one year living in an abandoned, off-the-grid farmhouse in order to claim her inheritance.

“People are really going to enjoy Wildwood,” she said. “It’s a gritty story about determination, guts and inspiration.”

Using old photographs, Elinor said she will present a one-hour slideshow at the launch describing her historical research along with interesting anecdotes.

The book launch will be held June 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the North Battleford Library.
