N.B. Alzheimer’s Walk planned for Thursday

May 22, 2018 | 2:00 PM

North Battleford residents will have a chance to show their support for people living with Alzheimer’s disease by taking part in an awareness walk and fundraiser planned for Thursday.

The motto for the Investors Group Walk for Alzheimer’s is “Together, Let’s Make Memories Matter.”

“We usually expect around 75 to 100 people,” said Angela Klaassen, events co-ordinator with the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan. “We’ve done the walk in North Battleford for the past five to six years, so we usually see a fairly good turnout.”

This year’s goal is to raise about $10,000 locally, Klaassen said, and $200,000 in total from all the walks taking place across Saskatchewan.

“It’s a great family fundraiser and it’s a great way to kick off your spring and have your family give back,” she said. “We definitely encourage everyone to come out and participate.”

Klaassen said there are almost 20,000 people living with Alzheimer’s or another related dementia in Saskatchewan. All of the funds raised from the event will benefit Alzheimer Society’s programs and services within the province as well as research to help find a cure for the disease.

The 2018 Walk for Alzheimer’s will take place on May 24 on the Centennial Park outdoor track. Registration starts at 6 p.m. with the walk itself running from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The walk in North Battleford will start with a short opening ceremony. Klaassen said the first lap around the track will be completed in memory of all those who have or are currently struggling with Alzheimer’s or related dementia.
