A 14-year-old was arrested and charged in connection with an armed robbery where a store owner was allegedly assaulted with a hatchet.

The youth, who cannot be identified due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested May 12 and charged with robbery, carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a weapon dangerous to the public, and several breaches of court-ordered conditions. The suspect allegedly entered a business in the 1100-block of 107th St. in North Battleford Thursday night, assaulting the owner and leaving with merchandise. The business owner was injured in the incident, RCMP said, though his condition was not life-threatening.

Battlefords RCMP Staff Sgt. Darcy Woolfitt thanked local residents for their help leading up to the arrest.

“This kind of cooperation between the public and RCMP is certainly appreciated,” Woolfitt said. “If we all work together, we can make our community safer.”
