BTEC challenging community to keep our city clean

May 10, 2018 | 8:00 AM

There was plenty of trash talk along Railway Ave. on Wednesday as close to a dozen clients and staff of the Battlefords Trade and Education Centre (BTEC) braved chilly winds while collecting garbage in an attempt to keep North Battleford beautiful.

For over 50 years BTEC has provided day programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the community by offering education and resources to improve their quality of life as well as outings in the community.

“This is just a nice way for us to get out, get some fresh air and show people that we are functional, capable people with something positive to offer” said Shelley Mandin, direct support worker supervisor with BTEC.

Mandin said the group wanted to challenge the rest of the city to get out and clean up various neighbourhoods now that the snow has melted.

“We know the city had its main clean-up last week but you know they can’t get to every area in the city so we want to get the ball rolling,” she added. “It’s just a bit of a time commitment and we are proving that if we can do it anyone can.”

She added throughout the summer months the BTEC clean-up crew will work in conjunction with the City of North Battleford going to various locations collecting trash and helping out where they can.

“Every one of our clients here today is having fun knowing that what they are doing is making a difference in our community,” she said. “And at the end of the day that’s a great feeling to have.”
