Big River holds benefit for family dealing with tragedy

The community of Big River is rallying around a local family dealing with tragedy.

Mike Harty’s wife Jodi and four-year-old daughter Marley were in a serious car accident last month. Marley passed away and Jodi is recovering from serious injuries in an Edmonton hospital.

“Her legs are broken. She has pins and everything,” friend and event organizer Sandy Chaykowski told paNOW. “It’s been a hard go.”

Chaykowski helped organize a benefit Saturday to raise funds for the Harty family so they don’t have to concern themselves with financial worries during the already-difficult period in their lives. She said the community had been very generous.

“We’ll need to pay for the hall and the band, but everyone has donated all the food and items for an auction,” she said.
