Local food bank in need of donations

Apr 27, 2018 | 12:00 PM

The local food bank is in need of non-perishable donations once again.

Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre Executive Director Erin Katerynych put out the call for help to fill the food bank shelves.

“We’re short on non-perishable food items right now,” she said. “We always do our big food drive at Christmastime. This carries us to this time of year where we are empty again. We are in need of a lot of different kinds of foods.”

Katerynych said most grocery stores in the area have barrels where people can drop off donations for the food bank. Donations can be delivered directly to the food bank at 1171 101st St. in North Battleford, she said, and cash donations are also accepted.

The local food bank’s usage numbers are higher in 2018 than they were at same time last year. About 1,800 people from the Battlefords and surrounding area use the food bank each month.

Katerynych said the organization is planning a food drive starting May 26 for a campaign called “Every Plate Full.” North Battleford and Meadow Lake food banks are teaming up for a challenge against Prince Albert’s food bank, she said, and they plan to coordinate a city-wide food drive as part of the local campaign.

“We’re going to do a food drive to see who can raise more food and funds in that time,” Katerynych said. “We’re going to approach different businesses and see if they want to help us out.”

Tax filing available

Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre is also providing free income tax services until the end of May.

Katerynych said people applying for this service need to come in to see if they qualify.

“It’s very important, especially for people who are on fixed incomes,” she said. “We have a lot of seniors who are on their pension and old-age security who come in and we do their taxes.”

The service is available every Wednesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for people on a low income, and Katerynych said they have already helped about 500 clients since the beginning of March.
