Finance Minister coming to N.B. for Chamber’s post-budget luncheon

Apr 23, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce is getting ready to host the upcoming post-budget luncheon with a presentation from Saskatchewan Finance Minister Donna Harpauer.

Chamber Executive Director Linda Machniak said it will be a good opportunity for chamber members to ask questions about the province’s objectives for the year ahead.

“Typically the ministers of finance who have attended in the past for post-budget events come to share with us their plan for the next year and highlight the key points in the budget,” she said. “It’s good for [members] to hear about the forecast the government is putting forward, what its plans are, and where it is headed.”

She said it’s also important for members to be able to ask the province questions about its future plans.

Machniak said one concern from chamber members relate to the PST charged on restaurant meals and how it is impacting business, so it will be helpful for them to discuss the issue with the finance minister directly during her visit.

She said people in specific sectors of the business community also may have their own questions to ask the minister during her visit.

“We’ve always had a robust discussion typically when the finance ministers come,” Machniak said. “That’s in part why we work with them, to try to ensure our members have the opportunity to ask those questions.”

Machniak said chamber members as well as municipal partners – the city and the town, representatives from the school divisions and the health region, plus anyone with an interest in the government budget or who receives funding may wish to attend as well.

The post-budget luncheon will take place at the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce’s Balych Mural Meeting Room in North Battleford from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on April 30.

The chamber is reminding anyone planning to attend the event to register by Thursday.
