Spring collection day coming up

Apr 19, 2018 | 5:00 PM

North Battleford residents will have a chance to get rid of all their household hazardous waste next week when the city holds its spring collection day.

People can drop off any accepted product, including household cleaning items, adhesives such as contact cement and caulking, corrosive products such as drain cleaner and ammonia, and poisons such as lawn herbicides, as a few examples.

City Manager Jim Puffalt said the city is asking residents to dispose of these types of products safely during the city’s hazardous waste day, instead of throwing them in the garbage.

He said residents are invited to bring items that shouldn’t go into the landfill to the public works yard and the city will be glad to dispose of the products for them.

“It’s dangerous to be in the landfill,” he said. “In fact, while our landfill is certainly lined and we have systems to collect leachate, [hazardous waste] if it’s disposed of in other places it could cause problems with ground-water and other issues. That’s why it’s important to dispose of it properly.”

Household Hazardous Waste Day will be held at the City of North Battleford Public Works Shop at 11112-6 Ave. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.

Residents can refer to the complete list of products that can be taken to the landfill on Hazardous Waste Day on the city’s website.

New date for Spring Clean-Up

The city is also planning its annual Spring Clean-Up event but has moved the date to Thursday, May 3, instead of Friday, April 20.

“We assumed a couple of weeks ago it was not going to be a very nice time for getting out there and picking up in the ditches,” Puffalt said on Thursday. “I drove around yesterday taking a look and there’s a lot of water in them.”

Puffalt said crews expect to be able to do a better job on the new scheduled date as long as the weather cooperates.

“We try to put out as many city staff as we can,” he said, adding workers will be cleaning up around the malls in the city and along the ditches, off Highway 4 and 16.

Puffalt said many businesses and schools will be participating in cleaning up areas around the city too.

“We really encourage everybody to get out and do your part,” said Puffalt. “If you see a piece of litter, pick it up.”

“Anytime anybody does anything, it’s a great thing for the city,” he added.

Spring Clean-Up takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be a free barbecue at the North Battleford Fire Hall at 12 p.m. for all participants.
