New name, new look for annual Smoker

Those who have enjoyed the Battlefords Wildlife Federation (BWF) annual Smoker for the past 72 years will notice some dramatic changes to this year’s event.

First and foremost, the event will now be known as the Wild Side of Summer Sports and Leisure Show and will be held at the Agrivilla and Agriplex rather than the Civic Centre. Battlefords Wildlife Federation (BWF) President Vickey Gottormson said these changes were made after careful consideration and consultation.

“We have listened to our vendors and those who support us every year and we decided to put a few new twists on our show this year,” said Gottormson. “We always wanted to make it bigger, so this year it’s been expanded to two days.”

The Wild Side of Summer Sports and Leisure Show will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The event still will feature many of the favourites that have made the show so popular.

“We will still be serving our fish and chips and of course our famous homemade smokies on a bun,” added Gottormson. “Basically for anyone who craves meat, this is the event for you.”

BWF vice-president Cheryl Irvine added that the change in location will be a positive for both vendors and visitors alike.

“We will have full access to all of the grounds and buildings at the Agriplex and Agrivilla,” said Irvine. “While we still expect to see big crowds at the event, by spreading it out it should not be as crowded as in years past.”

Irvine said the venue will feature many exhibitors with campers, RV’s, camping gear, hunting and fishing and much more.

“We are very excited to have the air cadets coming to the show and bring their flying simulator,” she added. “Basically pretty much anything to do with the outdoors or wildlife you will find at our event.”

Gottormson said that the organizing committee is still looking for volunteers to help with the event and if you would like to be an exhibitor contact Dan at 306-317-2452.
