UPDATE: Drivers warned to avoid travel due to whiteout conditions, icy roads

UPDATE: RCMP report Highway 14 has been reopened, though travel is still not recommended.

Battlefords RCMP have advised drivers to stay off the roads and avoid travel due to poor conditions Friday morning.

Police are not recommending travel on Highway 16 West and East, or Highway 4 North and South. The RCMP reported blowing snow and sheer ice conditions and said police were busy dealing with many calls for service on Friday morning.  

The Unity RCMP detachment has advised drivers that Highway 14 near Macklin is closed. About five km east of Macklin a semi-truck jack-knifed and was left blocking both lanes. This closure is expected to last for two to three hours. Travel in that area is also not recommended due to current storm conditions. If drivers do travel, police recommended they use parallel paved highways to avoid the closure.
