Senior basketball regionals set for this weekend

Mar 14, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Four senior high school basketball teams from the Battlefords will take part in regional rural tournaments at various cities across the province this weekend, with the hopes of gaining a berth to the provincial Hoopla tournament on March 23 and 24.

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School Vikings girls and boys teams are both in the 5A bracket, while the John Paul II Crusaders girls and boys teams are in the 4A bracket.

Comp Senior Boys

The senior boys Vikings enter regionals as the highest seed of the four local teams, earning second spot at the 5A regional boys tournament in Warman.

Yorkton Regional beat the Vikings at their home tournament two weekends ago, earning them the top spot.

As the second seed, the Vikings have drawn the St. Mary’s Marauders from Prince Albert in their first game, set for Friday night at 6:15 p.m.

If the Vikings win, they will play on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. against the winner of P.A. Carlton (third seed) and Estevan (sixth), where the winner will be granted a berth to Hoopla.

Comp Senior Girls

The senior girls Vikings are the next highest seed from the Battlefords, entering the 5A regional girls tournament in Weyburn as the third seed.

They will take on the host Weyburn Eagles (sixth) in their first game on Friday night at 8 p.m.

With a win, the Vikings will play the winner of St. Mary’s (second) and Yorkton Regional (seventh) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., where the winner will earn a Hoopla berth.

Crusaders Senior Girls

The fifth-seeded senior girls Crusaders travel to Moose Jaw for the 4A regional girls tournament, where they’ll open up with a game against the 12th-seeded Martin Monarchs from Regina on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

A debut win for the Crusaders would set up a game against either the hosts, Moose Jaw Central (fourth), or Martensville (13th) on Saturday at 11:45 a.m., where the winner will earn a berth to Hoopla.

Crusaders Senior Boys

Although they are the seventh seed, the senior boys Crusaders will be hosting the 4A regional boys tournament this weekend because Weyburn can’t host two different tournaments in one gym.

The Crusaders first game will be Friday at 6 p.m. against the 10th-seeded Lumsden Devils.

A win would then pit them against either Weyburn (second) or Martensville (15th) at 12 p.m. on Saturday, with the winner advancing to Hoopla.
