Winter Games action kicks off Monday with 10 sports

There will be plenty of action to take in on the first competition day of the Saskatchewan Winter Games in the Battlefords, whether it’s on the slopes, at the rink, or in the gym.

Here’s a list of what you can catch on Monday, Feb. 19.

Hockey

Male hockey is the first sport to get going, beginning at the Civic Centre and Don Ross Arena with round robin play at 9 a.m.

Games continue at both rinks throughout the day, with games at noon, 4:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.

That means each of the eight districts plays twice (the North district will not be icing a hockey team).

Gymnastics

Gymnastics is one of two sports to get going at 9:45 a.m, and will award medals on two fronts by days end.

Team mixed artistic gymnastics will take over the morning session on both the male and female side, while team mixed rhythmic and trampoline gymnastics will begin at 2 p.m.

All gymnastics will take place at the Nations West Fieldhouse.

Target Shooting

Target shooting also begins at 9:45 a.m.

There are six sessions scheduled throughout the day, all hosted at the John Paul ll Collegiate gym.

Team air rifle mixed has preliminary competition at 9:45 and then the finals at 1:45 p.m.

Team air pistol mixed has qualification at 11 a.m. and then the finals at 3 p.m.

The male super air rifle final is set for 6:30 p.m. and the female super air rifle final is set for 7:30 p.m.

Alpine skiing

Alpine skiing begins with multiple slalom sessions at Table Mountain at 10 a.m.

The U-12, U-14, and U-16 male and female slalom skiers will all have their first run at 10 a.m. and their second run at 1 p.m.

Synchronized Swimming

Solo co-ed preliminaries begin at the Co-op Aquatic Centre at 10:15 a.m. on Monday and the figures co-ed final takes place at 2:45 p.m.

Judo

Judo will take over the Nations West Fieldhouse all day Monday, with individual competition kicking off at 10:30 a.m. in multiple weight categories.

More matches continue at 1:30 p.m., with medal round competition beginning at 3 p.m.

Weightlifting

Four weightlifting sessions are scheduled for Monday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Dekker Centre with the 50 and 56 kg male competition.

The 44 and 48 kg female discipline will begin at 1 p.m., the 62 and 69 kg male categories begin at 3:30 p.m., and the 53 and 58 kg competition is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Speed Skating

Speed skating takes over Battleford Arena at the beginning of the week, starting with 1500m preliminaries at 10:45 a.m. on Monday.

The 1500m semis at set for 1:22 p.m. (male) and 2 p.m. (female), and the finals are set for 3:14 p.m. (female) and 3:36 p.m. (male).

Biathlon

The U-15 male and female sprint is the only biathlon scheduled for Monday.

The female competition begins at 11 a.m. and the male competition begins at 11:30 a.m, with all biathlon taking place at Blue Mountain.

Male Curling

Round robin male curling begins at noon on Monday at the Northland Power Curling Centre with all eight districts in action (the North district will not have a curling team).

Each team plays their second game at 7 p.m.
