New news source in the North

Jan 3, 2018 | 7:00 AM

The Jim Pattison Broadcast Group is expanding its online news coverage and investing in northern Saskatchewan.

Canada’s largest private radio and television company recently launched larongeNOW.com. It is the sixth portal to provide comprehensive news and information coverage to residents of Saskatchewan.

“Our radio stations have been re-broadcasting in La Ronge for some time now and this is just a natural extension to our commitment to the communities of the North. The news will be timely, relevant, and on point to the area it serves,” station manager Tyler Kinash said. “We look forward to our readers bringing forward ideas for content and helping make this their go-to source for information.”

La Ronge was left with minimal news coverage after CBC closed its one-person bureau in 2012. The La Ronge Northerner, a weekly newspaper, closed after more than four decades of publication in 2015.

“We have the radio station but having another media outlet is going to be a huge advantage to the community,” said La Ronge and District Chamber of Commerce President Matthew Klassen. “There is always stuff going on and information that needs to get out to the public and businesses can take advantage of the advertising as well.”

The acting Mayor of La Ronge, Glen Watchel, said the addition of larongeNOW.com will benefit the entire community.

“We have a voice now…which is something we lost years ago.”
