Battleford post office reopening delayed

Dec 18, 2017 | 1:00 PM

Local residents will have to wait a little longer before Canada Post will reopen the post office again at the historic building in Battleford.

Canada Post said it expects to reopen at its former site on 22 Street in early 2018.

“The building owners completed their renovations in the fall to the area we will be using. Since returning, we are working to ‎make the space operational again as a post office, by refitting it with new equipment, retail counters, post office boxes, product, etc. This process always takes a couple of months,” said spokesperson Phil Legault in an email to battlefordsNOW.

Cassandra Germsheid, who co-owns the building with her husband Jesse Crozier, said while initially they had hoped to see the post office re-open by Christmas that won’t be happening now unfortunately.

Otherwise, she said their renovation work wrapped up smoothly.

“We love it. I think it turned out great,” she said. “We’ve had lots of really positive comments from everybody.”

Germsheid said much of the reno work involved making upgrades to the building exterior – cleaning the brickwork, painting the roof, and painting the exterior doors a colour known as heritage red.

She said the interior work including making upgrades to the building plumbing and electrical system, and flooring.

Some of the work also involved rearranging the interior space and moving a stairwell so Canada Post is able to install more postal boxes for customers to use.

“They will be on the main floor, like they were before, and the upper two floors are still vacant,” Germsheid added. “In general they wanted to revamp the space. It was definitely overdue for some updating.”

Germsheid said while the clock in the tower of the building is functional, she and her husband won’t be running it anytime soon as they need to make sure everything is aligned properly first.

“We don’t want to add any wear and tear to the gears,” she added.
