RCMP warning about holiday grinches

Dec 15, 2017 | 4:00 PM

There’s nothing that can put a damper on the holidays as quickly as a break in and no one knows that better than Cpl. James Fenrich of the Battleford’s RCMP.

“Every year we see an increase in thefts whether it’s into vehicles or into homes in the area,” Fenrich said. “We realize that Christmas has a lot of hustle and bustle but it only takes a few moments to stop criminal activity from happening to you.”

Fenrich said there are many steps residents can take to keep thieves at bay.

“I guess the best thing people can remember is out of sight, out of mind,” he added. “If thieves can’t see it in your home or in your car then they are more likely to move on to the next home.”

Fenrich said if you plan on being away for a few days over the holidays including making sure your house and garage are securely locked and keep your curtains drawn.

“The idea behind this is so that thieves cannot look in and view what valuables you have inside your home,” he said. “You should also leave a light on in your home or have your lights on a timer so that it looks like someone is home.”

Fenrich said having your neighbours pick up your mail and keep your driveway clear of snow is another deterrent that will make thieves think the owner is home.

“The same goes with your vehicles,” he added. “Don’t leave valuables like your purse or presents in plain view; put them in your trunk and make sure your vehicle is locked.”

Fenrich said it’s commonly referred to as car shopping; thieves travel vehicle to vehicle checking doors to see if they are locked and once inside look for valuables to steal.

“Anything from loose change, sunglasses, radar detectors or sound systems can be scooped up,” he added. “Taking a quick moment to lock your vehicle could be the difference between having a happy holidays and a blue Christmas.”
