The Saskatchewan Party will be giving candidates in the party leadership race a chance to square off in a debate tonight in North Battleford.

Sask Party executive director Patrick Bundrock confirmed the current five leadership candidates will be taking part –  Alanna Koch, Ken Cheveldayoff, Tina Beaudry-Mellor, Gordon Wyant and Scott Moe.

“Our debates have been well attended. Things are moving along in a very smooth pace from the party’s side of view,” he said.

New candidate Rob Clarke, who just announced Wednesday he is running, won’t be taking part in the North Battleford debate as he still has to file his nomination papers.

Candidates have until Nov. 24 to file their papers to be eligible to run.

Bundrock said the debate will start with each candidate providing a one-minute opening statement.

Candidates then will respond to 10 questions selected randomly from a draw submitted by party members.

“Then there will be closing statements by each of the candidates, one minute in length,” Bundrock said. “At that point the debate will conclude.”

The debate will run from 60 to 90 minutes.

The Saskatchewan Party previously held debates Oct. 19 in Swift Current, Oct. 26 in Melfort, and Nov. 4 in Saskatoon.

Future debates are planned for Nov. 30 in Weyburn and Dec. 7 in Regina.

Bundrock said party members will take part in the vote through mail in ballots.

“The ballots will be mailed out in early December and [Saskatchewan Party members will] be able to return the ballots to the party office right up to the 26th of January,” said Bundrock.

Members can also vote in person at the leadership convention in Saskatoon on Jan. 27, when the leadership vote results will be announced.

The North Battleford debate will be held at the Dekker Centre from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and is open to Sask Party members only.
