Culprits sought for dumping dead geese and ducks on roadside

Sasktip is asking for the public’s help in catching the culprit or culprits responsible for killing and dumping 73 dead migratory birds by a roadside near Unity.

Officers believe the incident took place between the evening of Oct. 17 and the morning of Oct. 18.  

“We’re still looking for some help from the public to see if we can find out who did this,” said Saskatchewan conservation officer Rich Hildebrand. 

Officers found 44 snow geese, 26 ducks, and three greater white-fronted geese shot, dumped and wasted by a roadside, seven miles east of Unity and six miles north on the Swarthmore Road.

Hildebrand said none of the meat was removed from the birds.

It’s illegal under the Wildlife Act and the Migratory Bird Act to leave meat to waste.

Hildebrand said North Battleford conservation officers received a call about the birds on Oct. 21 and went to investigate. 

“They believed it was a few days before that that this actually occurred,” he said. “They were along-side a gravel or grid road.”

“It’s something that is being investigated and that happens every year,” Hildebran said. “Every fall we have some incidents like these in the province. We’d like to get to the bottom of it, definitely.”

He added there are significant fines to offenders who violate the Wildlife Act and Migratory Bird Act.

“The maximum fines are up to $100,000 and possibly up to a five-year hunting ban,” he said. 

Hildebrand said he hasn’t received any tips yet, so he is encouraging the public to provide its assistance.

Sasktip offers rewards up to $2,000 for tips that lead to an arrest or conviction of individuals involved in a crime.
