Cousin describes Brydon Whitstone as ‘a quiet boy’

Just days after the shooting death of 22-year-old Brydon Bryce Whitstone by Battleford’s RCMP, a family member is speaking out about the young man and the incident.

Whitstone died Saturday night as he was being transported to hospital after being shot by an RCMP officer following a high speed chase which ended when the vehicle he was driving allegedly rammed into a police cruiser at the intersection of 15th Ave. and 105 St. in North Battleford.

“It’s sad he (Brydon Whitstone) had to go that way,” Braydon’s cousin, Eldon Whitstone, said. “I keep thinking about his son and how much he loved that little boy.”

According to an RCMP media release, Mounties received a complaint of a man being chased and shot at by occupants of another vehicle.

RCMP report the suspect vehicle which Whitstone was in was located and a brief pursuit followed before a collision immobilized the vehicle.

“He was a quiet boy who loved taekwondo and boxing,” Eldon added. “He used to follow me and my younger brother around because we used to be boxers.”

The cousin said he was notified of the incident from family members on Saturday night and is still in shock at what happened.

“To the best of my knowledge no one from the Mounties has reached out to the family,” Whitstone said. “They are coping the best they can.”

A second suspect, an adult female, who was also in the vehicle was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released back into custody.

One RCMP member also suffered minor injuries in the pursuit and was taken to hospital, treated and released.

RCMP Chief Supt. Maureen Levy told reporters at a news conference on Sunday the officers involved in the incident are currently off duty and will receive counselling.

As per RCMP policy, the Saskatchewan RCMP has requested an independent, external investigation into the circumstances surrounding Braydon Whitstone’s death. Regina Police Service is conducting the investigation and the Ministry of Justice was asked to appoint an independent observer.
