Oct 18, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Former AAA Star Luke Reid has been named to Team Canada’s U-17 team that will compete in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge this November.

The 16-year-old Warman native now plays for the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League, but spent two seasons in the Battlefords playing for the midget AAA Stars where he put up 38 points in 82 games. This year for the Vees, Reid has recorded five assists in nine games.

Every year, Canada sends three teams — black, white, and red — to the U-17 Hockey Challenge. Those teams compete against the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden, and the United States. This year, the event will be in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, B.C., from Nov. 5 to 11.

Five other Saskatchewan natives were named to Team Canada.

Nolan Maier, from Yorkton, will be one of six Canadian goaltenders at the tournament. Maier was a late cut by the Saskatoon Blades as a 16-year-old at training camp and was with the Yorkton Terriers ever since, suiting up for four games. He is the youngest goaltender in the SJHL and the only player on invited to the U-17 Hockey Challenge that plays in the SJHL.

Reid will be joined on the blue line by Kaedan Korczak, another Yorkton native currently playing for the Kelowna Rockets, and Braden Schneider, a Prince Albert native currently playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Up front, Humboldt’s Logan Barlage and Regina’s Harrison Blaisdell, who play for the Swift Current Broncos and Chilliwack Chiefs, respectively, will also represent their country.

Sixty-six total players were named to the three teams, with the most (22) coming from Ontario.
