New CT scanner unveiled to public at BUH

Sep 30, 2017 | 8:00 AM

It was standing room only in the lobby of the Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH), as officials and the public got a chance to see the new computed tomography (CT) scanner Friday afternoon.

Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit joined Prairie North Health Region representatives, BUH foundation members, staff and volunteers in celebration of the $1.2 million, 160-slice CT scanner.

“As a government, we are proud to contribute $600,000 towards the enhanced CT services in the Battlefords and surrounding area,” Ottenbreit said. “We recognize that when you partner with rural communities it takes the stress off our major centres but more importantly gives easy access to top quality healthcare close to home.”

Provincial funding was matched by funds raised by the BUH foundation including a 12-hour radiothon on CJNS/CJNB, Q93 and 93.3 The Rock, which raised $474,647.

“We need to recognize the wonderful contribution of the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group of stations who came on board to help with this endeavour,” David Fan, Prairie North Health Region chief executive officer told the audience.  “It was a wonderful contribution to our community.”

For those who worked tirelessly on the fundraising campaign with the BUH foundation, it was an emotional day.

“This is my proudest moment as a member of the BUH Foundation board,” said current chair of the foundation Jay Crocket. “I may be a little biased but we truly have the best donors in the world here in the Battlefords and area and we can’t thank you enough for making this happen.”

The first patient examined by the new CT scanner was on Sept. 18.
