Tribute to Ed Sullivan Show coming to Dekker Centre

Sep 29, 2017 | 8:00 AM

Fans of the golden age of television can revisit those memories when a tribute to The Ed Sullivan Show comes to the Dekker Centre on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Entertainer Ovide Pilon and his ensemble of musicians will have an assortment of performances..

“We will have eight characters for this show which will be about two hours long,” Pilon said. “You will see tributes to Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, the Beach Boys, the Beatles and we will also have commercials from the era as well.”

The original Ed Sullivan Show ran every Sunday night from 1948 until 1971 and is especially known to the Second World War and baby boom generations and introduced many breakthrough performances for entertainers like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Richard Pryor, the Dave Clark Five, Janis Joplin and Joan Rivers.

“An appearance on the Sullivan show could make or break your career,” Pilon added. “He was one of the most intriguing figures in television history for sure.”

The idea to create an Ed Sullivan tribute show actually came from an agent Pilon knew who asked his group to play something more than just Beatles music after his group was booked to do a gig in Langley, B.C.

“He said, you guys know stuff by C.C.R. and the Beach Boys, maybe you can do something like Ed Sullivan used to do.” Pilon recalled. “The seed was planted and we came up with the show.”

This is not the first tribute show Pilon joined. In the early 90s, he was part of a troupe which performed in a Beatles tribute show called Liverpool which travelled throughout the world including a stop at the casino in North Battleford. Pilon said because of that experience he knows what to expect from the audience.

“Our show is really popular with baby boomers so we can’t cheat,” he said. “They will know the words to every song so we got to on our toes.”

Tickets for the Ed Sullivan Show can be purchased at the Dekker Centre box office or by visiting their website. Showtime is at 8 p.m.
