The 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games committee inched closer to their fundraising goal on Friday thanks to a generous donation by the Rotary Club of the Battlefords.

Games committee co-chair Rob Rongve said the Rotary’s Club’s $25,000 donation will help cover the cost of the additional emergency exit doors installed at the Battlefords Civic Centre earlier this year.

Rongve said the community has really embraced the Saskatchewan Winter Games.

“We have had a number of businesses step forward and support the games fundraising effort already,” Rongve said.

He said the Rotary Club of the Battlefords was the first service club to make a contribution to the games. He also added the fundraising campaign is getting closer to its overall goal.

Rotary Club of the Battlefords Past-President Warren Williams said his organization was proud to support the Winter Games with the $25,000 donation.

“Typically we support bricks and mortar projects, so the Winter Games is a little out of our norm,” Williams said. “However, when an event of this magnitude comes along, it’s important to support it for sure.”

Williams notes that the upgrades to the Civic Centre will leave a lasting legacy for area youth which is one of Rotary’s key pillars.

The Civic Centre is one of twelve sports venues used for the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games and will host male hockey and figure skating.

The games will be held in North Battleford and area from Feb. 18 to 24, 2018. The event will showcase more than 1,800 of Saskatchewan’s top young athletes in 17 sports and is expected to draw more than 7,000 visitors to the area during the week-long spectacle.
