Town looking for more volunteer firefighters

Sep 19, 2017 | 10:23 AM

The Town of Battleford is looking for a few good men and women to join its volunteer fire department.

“It’s a great way to give back to your community,” Mayor Ames Leslie said following Monday’s meeting.

He said to be part of the volunteer fire department, individuals need to live in Battleford, be physically fit, and pass a medical test.

They also will need to attend training sessions at the local fire department on Monday evenings.

“It is a commitment of time,” Leslie said.

People accepted as volunteer firefighters also need to be able to respond to fire department calls for assistance when required.

Volunteer firefighters receive a payment as compensation for their training and on-call time.

“Whether you are 18 years old or you are 55 and physically fit …, it’s a great way to come down and be part of the town,” Leslie said.

The call is also to replace members planning retirement.

“With the aging demographic of the fire department, it’s kind of a succession plan to bring in more people to start to make plans for the future,” the mayor said.

Currently, the fire department has 20 members which includes officers and regular firefighters.
