Northwest Territorial Days talent impresses fair-goers

Aug 16, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Matt Henry is an old pro when it comes to juggling. He is also a fan favourite performing bubble art – his latest talent.

Henry gave a bubble art show at the midway at Northwest Territorial Days exhibition in North Battleford Wednesday.

Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Henry has been living in Vancouver for the past five years where he has been perfecting his bubble art show, in addition to his famous juggling act.

“I spent a lot of my adult life in public spaces practicing various weird things – juggling, hacky sack, Frisbees, and stunt kite,” he said.

Henry said to his surprise people seemed to get a lot of delight out of his bubble art show so he added that to his act.

“The first bubble recipe that I saw a friend posted it on Facebook,” he said. “After that, I just kind of went down the rabbit hole.”

For his juggling routine at the fair, the world champion will be performing a show each day from Wednesday to Friday at 6:45 p.m. at the Agriplex.

“That show is the culmination of my 20 years of juggling experience,” Henry said. “It has a lot of unusual things – like weird juggling props from China that a lot of people haven’t seen, a lot of old vaudeville juggling tricks, and a lot of crazy stunt kind of skills as well.”

Some of the props he will be juggling at the Northwest Territorial Days event include everything from yo-yos to knives, to garden weasels.

“The dangerous stuff, if you have been doing it a long time is not really that dangerous,” Henry said. “You practise with an object like a club or a pin until you never catch the wrong side. At that point you are probably ready to move on to things like knives or torches. For me, I know if I throw it wrong. And if I throw it wrong, basically, I am going to let it fall rather than try to catch it.”

Battlefords Agricultural Society general manager Jocelyn Ritchie said some of the other popular events at the fair this year include the chariot races on Wednesday and Thursday at 3 p.m.

The kids’ pedal tractor pull taking place Wednesday to Friday all day is also a fun event for the little ones, as they try their strength in this competition – a few of the many offerings at the fair this year.
