Albers dominate in first start with Mariners

North Battleford’s Andrew Albers picked up his first Major League Baseball win in four seasons as he gave up one run while scattering six hits in five innings helping the Seattle Mariners defeat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 last night at Safeco Field in Seattle.

Albers struck out four batters in his first big league start of the season after spending the season with the Atlanta Braves AAA affiliate in Gwinnett Georgia, where he chalked up an impressive 12-3 record this season with an ERA of 2.61.

Jonathan Schoop’s 26th home run of season in the first inning was the only damage the Orioles could muster against the 31-year-old lefty who was acquired by the Mariners in a deal on Friday with the Braves. Albers was projected to join the Seattle Triple-A farm system to help replenish their roster that had been depleted with call-ups to the Mariners. However with a recent injury to James Paxton, Albers became the 16th starting pitcher the Mariners have used this season, the most in the majors.

Albers last pitched in a major league game on Sept. 23, 2016 as a member of the Minnesota Twins, making a relief appearance ironically against the Seattle Mariners. His last major league win came back on Aug. 12, 2013 when he threw a complete game two-hitter against the Cleveland Indians.
