Town of Battleford parade back on track

Aug 3, 2017 | 5:00 PM

The Battlefords community came through in the nick of time to show their support so the Town of Battleford’s annual parade could go ahead as planned.

Parks and Recreation department director Jordan Schechtel confirmed next Friday’s parade has now received more than 30 registrations, with more expected, so it will be able to proceed without any problems.

“As of right now, we have 35 entries, with more to come in I’m sure by the time when next week rolls around. We will be going ahead with the parade as planned,” he said. “It was nice to see that we did have some entries in the last couple of weeks come in. It’s good it’s coming together.”

On July 21, Schechtel said he was concerned there wouldn’t be enough participants to warrant holding the parade since only 10 entries had registered at that time. Since then many more groups signed on, so there will be sufficient numbers for the event to go on.

The theme for this year’s parade is Canada’s 150th anniversary.

Schechtel said people watching the event can expect to see a range of participants.

“There are floats, there are some horses, classic cars, and people walking – so a good variety,” he said.

The town also has two or three of its own floats taking part.

The deadline for entries to register for the parade is August 7, but Schechtel said the town will be able to accept the odd straggler if any come in past the cut-off date.

The town will allow participants to store their floats in the Battleford arena between August 11 and the time of the Northwest Territorial Days parade in North Battleford on August 15, to make it easier for those who may be taking part in both parades.

Schechtel added people should keep in mind the town will store the floats on a first come, first served basis, space permitting.

The Town of Battleford parade on August 11 will start at 7 p.m. this year, beginning at St. Vital School’s outdoor track, traveling along to 22nd Street, turning left at Pennydale Junction to First Avenue, and then going along 25th Street, and finishing back at St. Vital School’s track.

The pre-registered entries in the parade will be judged from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Late arrivals will not be judged according to the town website.

The time for the fireworks changed from 11 p.m. to one hour earlier at 10 p.m. The show will be held in the open space across from Fort Battleford, between 10th Street and 15th Street.
