Town of Battleford incentive program favourable for development

The Town of Battleford gave the nod to two applications for its incentive program at its recent council meeting on July 17.

Two new single-family residences are being developed and owners will be eligible for a three-year exemption period from the municipal portion of their taxes.

“Any new build in the town is wonderful progress,” Coun. Judy Pruden said. “If we can assist them by waiving the municipal portion of the taxes for the required number of years covered, it is a positive thing for the town.”  

The incentive program is available for what’s known as the developer incentive for new subdivision project as well as commercial-industrial building and residential building projects. The program offers a tax break for a specified period for approved projects. 

The town has been running its incentive program for a number of years to encourage new development.

At its prior meeting on June 5, council agreed to amend the incentive program to abate only the municipal property tax, effective June 6. Council approved a recommendation from administration to revise the policy so only the municipal tax portion is exempt, not the education tax portion, similar to other neighbouring municipalities.
