Saskatchewan finishes second in medal standings at NAIG

For the second straight time, British Columbia edged out Saskatchewan in the overall medal total at the North American Indigenous Games.

At the 2014 games in Regina, B.C.’s 160 medal total was just one more than Saskatchewan’s 159. At this year’s events in Toronto that wrapped up Saturday, B.C. won 179 medals, while Saskatchewan took home 166.

Nearly half of the provinces medals, 76 to be exact, came from athletics. Twenty-one of those 76 were won in the 19U female category, 15 in the 16U female category, and 10 in the 14U female category. Thirteen were won in the 14U male category, nine in the 16U male category, and eight were won in the 19U male category.

Dylan Bauman stood out with six gold medals, as did Jaira Cross Child, who won five. Kayden Clarke also won five medals in track: three gold and two bronze.

Twenty of the 166 medals came from the pool, as the swim team won two gold, nine silver, and nine bronze.

Leading the way for them was Battlefords Orcas swimmer Slade Pruden, who won six medals on his own. Pruden won two silver and four bronze. Rainer Olson also won five medals in swimming: one gold, two silver, and two bronze.

Fifteen of Saskatchewan’s medals came from rifle shooting, 12 from wrestling, 10 from canoe/kayak, seven from 3D archery, seven from cross country, six from badminton, four from soccer, three from softball, three from volleyball, one from baseball, one from golf, and one from lacrosse.
