Coghill named 2017 NSRBL MVP

Jul 21, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Thanks to a perfect 5-0 record and league-low 1.40 earned-run-average, Border City Blue Jays pitcher Jared Coghill was named North Saskatchewan River Baseball League’s most valuable player this week.

The MVP is voted on by the 13 teams in the league.

Coghill struck out 38 batters in 30 innings of work, while also walking just seven batters all season long.

At the plate, he also proved valuable, batting .414 with 12 hits and eight runs-batted-in in 10 games. He added eight runs and stole one base.

With his help, the Jays had the league’s best record, at 12-2.

The Jays are currently in the league semifinals against the Lloydminster Twins. Game one of that series is set for tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Runner-up for league MVP was North Battleford Beavers pitcher Kyle Palmer.

Palmer had a 3-2 record and 2.88 ERA while appearing in six games. He struck out 23 batters in 34 innings of work.

Just like Coghill, Palmer had a good season at the plate, batting .400 with 14 hits and 12 RBI in 11 games. Palmer also had 12 runs and stole two bases this season.

The Beavers lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Unity Cardinals, dropping a 5-2 decision in the third and deciding game of the series.

Third in league voting was Rhett Feser from the Cardinals, who gave the Beavers headaches in that series. Feser had the league’s second-best ERA at 1.94 and struck out a league-high 52 batters. He carried a 4-1 record in the regular season.

The Cardinals are currently up one game to none in the semifinals against Standard Hill, following their 4-3 win last night. Game two of that series is set for Tuesday night.
