Unity’s Wood finishes top-5 at Amateur Men’s Championship after lead slips away

Jul 20, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Following a rough back-9 on Thursday afternoon, Unity’s Justin Wood finished in fifth place at the Golf Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championship in Yorkton this week.

The 2016 champion slowly saw his lead slip away after bogeying four of the final five holes. He even had a one stroke lead with just two holes to go. But after his bogey on the par-4 18th, he was in a four-way tie for second place at 1-under. Another bogey on the first playoff hole ensured his fifth-place finish.

Last year on the championship’s last day, Wood won despite a double bogey on hole 18.

His best day at this year’s championship was by far the third day, when he shot an impressive 7-under 65, the best single day of any golfer. Unfortunately, he also shot a four-over 76 on Monday and Thursday.

Wood entered the week sitting in 15th place on the Men’s Order of Merit Tour thanks to the 700 points he received for winning June’s Norridge Saskatoon Amateur Championship. At that tournament, golfers play on three different courses over three days. Wood finished at 4-under thanks to a strong first two days.

Wood golfs for the University of Montevallo Falcons, an NCAA Division II team in Alabama, after playing for two years at Lethbridge College.

The Men’s Order of Merit Tour has next week off, but two tournaments are set for the Aug. 5 weekend, one in Estevan and one in Prince Albert.
