Waste transfer station coming to Battleford

Jul 18, 2017 | 5:00 PM

Calling it “a wonderul opportuniity,” Town of Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie said there is plans to enter into an agreement with a firm that will develop a new waste transfer station in Battleford.

Aaron Beres, assistant general-manager with Loraas Environmental Services, based in  North Battleford, made a presentation to Town of Battleford council Monday about the plans.

As part of the project, the firm will construct an enclosed 7,560 sq. ft. pre-engineered steel building with a concrete floor, at the site south of 13 Street West, next to the town’s old decommissioned landfill site. It is expected the new station will take about six months to complete.

When the trailer from the waste transfer station is full, Loraas will transfer the contents to a landfill in the RM of Wilton, located south of town of Marshall.

Beres said the new facility in Battleford will be enclosed by fencing and gated.

It will also have interceptor pits and storage tanks to hold and manage any leachate from accumulated solid-waste materials.

The transfer station will only accept household and solid waste, not hazardous-waste materials. There will also be containers at the site for recyclables.

“We can’t take anything you couldn’t take to a regular landfill,” said Beres.

Currently, the Town of Battleford transports its solid waste to the North Battleford landfill.

When the new transfer station is built, the town will cover the tipping costs to have its waste transported to the landfill in the RM of Wilton. This rate is still being negotiated.

Loraas will cover the funds to build the facility at about a $2-million capital cost. It has also spent more than $25,000 to develop the proposal.

The firm plans to build the facility this season. Plans are to have the site open to the public five days a week, Tuesdays to Saturdays.

The Town of Battleford has already worked with the Ministry of the Environment to ensure the project complies with all government regulations.

Mayor Leslie confirmed council approved the agreement with Loraas Environmental Services to start work “as soon as the fine details are completed” with the town’s administration.

The goal is to have the site open for work in early January 2018.

“It’s very exciting for the town of Battleford,” said Leslie. “It’s been a long time since we had our own waste management facility and I think it’s going to present options and a lot of efficiency and efficacy for the town in its departments.”

He said the transfer station will also provide an option to residents to get rid of their extra waste “without having to transport it across the river to the city all the time.”
